In This episode I discuss the mildly disappointing Sayid centric episode. Driveshaft guests stars on the Finer things club with Charlotte. I do a little time jumping, Sayid is captured by Oldham and I and to top it all off Sherry Kootsra steps on the soap box for her disappointing review of things so far. I have mixed feelings as well… They have some explaining about paradoxes to do.
More than mixed feelings – this ep was not successful. Andrews had some moments of terrible acting… the flashback was a waste… the Kate/Hurley/Jack breakfast scene kind of demonstrates how awkward this episode was.
A real bummer.
I hope Donald can make something fun out of it. Maybe more drug induced Sayid laughter gone wild!
When I saw the chicken scene, I immediately thought of Eko. The scence parallels the flashback where Eko kills (a human) so that his brother doesn’t have to. Also, both Sayid and Eko eventually feel guilt over their murderous ways and try to change. Neither succeeds. Sayid keeps trying to solve problems by killing, and ultimately Eko is unrepetant as well. I think that the chicken scene exists to remind us of Eko and the themes of guilt, redemption, Smokey’s role, etc.
To Jackie – or it is just lazy writing. The opening was so detached from the rest of the episode (with the exception of the chicken salad sandwich, but I did not find that very clever) – that is really bugged me.
As a feverish viewer of LOST – the opening kind of cheapened the Eko story.
Watching Sayid go on his nine millimeter world tour was dissapointing only to the point there was no mention of the Economist as a payoff. If Sayid took care of everybody on the list what happened to Elsa’s boss? Why not go after Widmore himself?
The scene with Sayid, Ben, and Roger Linus was absolutely gut wrenching. I hated Ben’s father when we saw him blaming Ben for his mother’s death in season three but this new scene brought my anger towards Roger to another level. Even Sayid wanted to take a swing at Roger and he HATES Ben. Watching Ben stutter and cower before his abusive father was tough to watch because the intereaction between the two felt very real.
And Sayid then using Ben’s desire to flee his abusive father and Dharma was amazing. I am convinced that Sayid convinces Ben to create a diversion and release him from the cell with the promise of taking him to “his people”. He manipulated Ben and gained his trust just so he could kill him. Diabolical and stone cold.
Did Sayid kill Jin? There was a bone snapping sound. I figure he just knocked him out, but is it possible that he killed him?
Will the Island save Ben’s life or prehaps Jack will blow his cover, and take over as the doctor?
this episode was 95% suck, 5% awesome. 1% when Ben got shot, 4% (and the best moment of the season) when Uncle Rico chucked the tray into the wall with the best Napoleon Dynamite uncoordinated arms ever. me and my friends immediately busted out laughing for about 30 seconds straight. who can even take that actor seriously after his roles as King Vidiot, Dirty Curt and Uncle Rico? sheer genius. the rest of the episode just wasnt cutting the mustard. im fed up with cheesy character development, relationships and 45 episode cons of irony. i want fear. i want Walt on the island with powers to damage brains. enough soap opera, more “horror.”
Disappointing episode, but not really that bad. I was actually starting to feel for young Ben and understand why he was the way he was when he grew up. The end was a shocker – I think we all knew that Sayid had thought of killing young Ben but to actually do it (or attempt to anyway) was still a shock.
“He’s our you”? Really? That guy was NOTHING like Sayid “Chicken Killer” Jarrah. C’mon! The Sayid back story is probably the most boring – so I’m glad they showed it first, but let’s get on to why Kate and Hurley were convinced to go back. That should be interesting!
Is it me or has Jack become the least interesting person on the show this season? There has to be something interesting brewing – otherwise Jack will just be a tourist while the rest of the Losties do whatever it is that they came back to do.
Is young Ben dead? Not a chance! He will rise…
I might be pretty disappointed if Ben is not dead. I think Ben’s death was a course correction. He was never supposed to live to cause the purge.
You guys have some great thoughts you are really passionate about this episode whether you like it or not and thats great. Also i feel the need to instigate an argument on here, so Kelly G I overheard brucknerian2 in the supermarket say that your theories are dumb. Now you two fight.
I think Darlton may have written themselves in a corner on this one. As always, I will wait and reserve final judgment after we see what they have in store for us. The way I see it, however, either Ben has to be dead, which contradicts everything we have heard from the writers and Faraday or little Ben will come back to life and that’s a cheap “cliff-hanger” writing trick that has hampered other shows in the past. I really have come to expect more from the writers if the latter turns out to be true. I echo(no-pun intended)the comments above about the pointless flashback and I hope they don’t do this with the other 316 survivors. Not the best episode but I do believe that little Ben is a long LOST(ok pun intended)Culkin twin AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Ben’s totally still alive. There wasn’t even any blood! If the bullet had hit his heart, there’d be blood spurting out everywhere! I’m confident that the writers know what they’re doing with the story.
I think miniBen is alive. I like the idea that some people have that Juliet helps to save him. I think it could go like this: Sawyer comes over to check on Jin, finds Ben, and brings him back home so Juliet can try to save him. (Sawyer doesn’t ask Jack because he’s supposed to be a janitor.) Ben develops a major crush on Nurse Juliet and that’s one reason he brings her back all those years later.
Jed, I can see your point about the chicken cheapening Eko’s story. I hadn’t looked at it that way. I mean killing a chicken is really no big deal compared to what Eko did as a child. There are millions of chicken-killers who go on to lead perfectly normal lives. But I still stick by my original position that the chicken scene had a purpose, and the writers want us to remember Eko for some reason.
Hooray4Hawking’s comment just made me think: why aren’t the people in the DI questioning Juliet’s ability to deliver a baby by C-section? One day she delivers a baby, the next day she’s back in the garage, no questions asked?? Shouldn’t they be wondering who this woman is and why they have her working on Dharma vans?
AnnaInIndiana, that’s a good question and we may see something like that happen soon! The day the Losties arrived was just the day after Ethan was born, and they had the Sayid issue to deal with too. So now maybe Horace and Co. will start to wonder about the folks who joined them after a “shipwreck” and not through the standard DI recruitment process. Things could turn sour pretty quickly if that’s the case!
