In this episode I discuss the oddly paced episode “316″. We have some great feedback and Mikhail’s flashback of how he returned to the podcast is finally revealed. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are back for the Finer things club segment and a special fans grinds my gears segment is in store.  Send all emails is lost@donaldislost.com or send a voicemail to 206-984-1289.

i have to give it an average rating. sometimes the writing is just too superfluous or mind numbingly ambiguous. a prime example was Hurley being in jail. it seems like they completely scrapped that storyline and just let him out of jail. the non-linear format is almost becoming non-climactic where you know the outcome but them filling in gaps is suppose to blow your face off. and what about dialog lines like “don’t ever ask me about him again”? Jack is blood related to Aaron and he writes if off no problem so he can get laid. strange, strange motives and interaction on the show.

I have to somewhat agree with you. The Aaron and Kate story line is unbelievable.

    I didn’t like those stuff too . But it was a one hell of an episode ! I Voted for a 5,and I wanted to vote for a 6 ! :)

I knew Dess will make something cool, “I’m done with the Island ” that was really good !
I loooooooooooved to see Hurly , and Jin in the Dharma stuff :) that was really cool .
One of the best episodes ever!

Sorry, but I had to give it an average rating. It was a shame because the beginning was so promising. The reveal in the off-island dharma station was incredible. The rest of the episode, however, was completely bogged down with filler (I thought we were promised no more filler)! I completely agree with the Bone Grizzler about the “don’t ask me” line. I have come to expect much more from the Lost writers. By the time we see bloodied Ben, my interest was gone. Better than anything else on tv, but my least favorite of season 5.

I didn’t see this episode as filler. Watching Jack struggle with his faith and ultimately coming to the realization that Locke was right was something I enjoyed. Admitting that Locke was right must be killing him. By accepting this Jack also must be thinking that nearly every step he made trying to get people off the island was wrong.

It felt that Jack’s motivation to get people off the island in season 4 was less about leading people home, and more about proving Locke (and Ben for that matter) wrong. Look where that road has now led him. Admitting Locke was right must be killing him. Everything bad that happened, even Locke’s death, he feels the burden of.

Yet, I will admit the grandad scene was a little forced. Seriously, who calls there grandad “grandad” when talking with them in person? It must be an LA thing.

As far as Kate’s “don’t ask me” line I was fine with it. Jack accepting this was more about losing Kate twice for violating her trust and thinking he lost her for good, now he has what is likely his final chance. He needs her to be back with him, mainly so he can get back to the island and start “fixing” things, not necessarily to get her into bed. Although if I had the choice of not knowing about a nephew I hardly knew for a night with Kate, well that is a tough call…

It wasn’t the best episode of the season, but I still liked it a lot. I loved looking for ways that flight 316 is similar to 815. I loved Hurley buying the 78 tickets and having the spanish comic book and guitar. Ben saying he didn’t care what happened to the other people on the plane creeped me out big time, but hey, it’s Ben, we shouldn’t be surprised really. I thought that showing them once they’ve crashed on the island at both the beginning and the very end was kind of strange though. Maybe I just didn’t quite get why they showed that twice.

The “eye opening” scene was the first time this season that I was actually blown away. It would have had more impact though if they had shown it once and kept the entire scene at the end. I also loved the “Doubting Thomas/Jack” parallel and how it was brought into sharp focus with Locke’s suicide note.

  8. Mark B says:

What the people who have voted this episode as average need to understand is that the way this episode was filmed, it’s has set up future episode flashbacks. We’ll have a flashback at how Hurley came to know about this Adjira flight and why he has a guitar case with him. There’ll be a flashback of Sayid, we’ll have one of Kate/Aaron, we’ll have one of Ben….how did he get to be beaten up? We’ll have one of Locke for sure and his ‘suicide’ and we may even have one of Desmond.

  9. Donald says:

Great thoughts guys, keep them coming every week. Ill address everything on the podcast!

  10. tinythebodyguard says:

Ok everyone is stating that they set this up so they can do flashbacks in future episodes but didnt Damon and Carlton say that they would not be doing anymore flash back this season when they spoke at comicon? Just a thought. Love the podcast Donald, stay safe out there!
